Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, P.O. Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract It is widely recognized that all-optical packet switched telecommunication nodes require a form of all-optical buffering and synchronization to avoid congestion in the switching matrix . We present a novel all-optical switching concept suitable for these purposes. We present the switching concept as well as some preliminary modeling results.

Buffering in All-Optical Packet-Switching
The role of optical buffering in the development of all-optical cross-connects is discussed, followed by an analysis of fibre delay line implementations in optical buffers. It is shown that the traffic model plays an important part in the analyses of the systems, together with the traffic load, the use of internal buffer wavelengths, and the cross-connect architecture. Travelling buffers have s...

Scalability of packet switched cross-connects that utilize all-optical signal processing is a crucial issue that eventually determines the future role of photonic signal processing in optical networks. After reviewing several labeling techniques, we discuss label stacking and label swapping techniques and their benefits for scalable optical packet switched nodes. All-optical devices for impleme...
متن کاملGb / s Silicon All - Optical Packet Switch for Buffer - less Optical Burst Switching
We experimentally demonstrate a 160-Gb/s Ethernet 4 packet switch using an 8.6-mm-long silicon nanowire for optical 5 burst switching, based on cross phase modulation in silicon. One 6 of the four packets at the bit rate of 160 Gb/s is switched by an 7 optical control signal using a silicon based 1 × 1 all-optical packet 8 switch. Error free performance (BER < 1E-9) is achieved for the 9 switch...
متن کاملEffect of Ingress Buffering on Self-Similarity of Optical Burst Traffic
Recently, optical burst switching and aggregated optical packet switching have gained significant exposure as possible future mechanisms for routing aggregated IP traffic over all-optical core networks. However, the limited buffering capacity in all-optical networks presents a major challenge, as current IP traffic displays strong selfsimilar properties. Reducing the burst loss rate of such lon...
